Just an Amazing ” freebie ” day out – Hastings Pirate day 2016

Firstly , I admit to having taken this from the web ( my own blog infact ) so is that allowed , who knows Not to sure if I should use the text above for this  as it’s really a review of  what has been a great  year  ( band wise  )  and  there are still events to come this year .

I have the pleasure of performing with  Celebration Samba, a band based in   West Sussex . The band has been around for a while  and  it seems to get better  every year . The reason for the blog is an event that  being in the band Takes me to  each year, a great day for Families, Adults, Children, mums and dads alike .

Its my involvement with the band that has taken me to so many places, dressed me up in fancy dress, made me smile, and  really enjoy something that other people seem to enjoy me doing .

Hastings Pirate Day 2016 on Sunday 17th July 2016

There is just so much going on, and its only if you tell people about these things that the word gets out

So why blog about it, well, the band has shown me that  it’s not just the ” big & shiny ” events that are fun, Dressing up. and playing & performing  can be good & its so much fun.Last  year has also seen oldmanleslie, don his pirate  wig, use his best AAAAARRRRRRR

Before I get picked up saying the event is Free, you will have to pay to get there, you may have to buy  food / drink etc, and you may need to get parking and things for your children.

So I guess the main point of the blog, is that  if like me you are at a carnival procession ( big or small)and you see something that looks like fun, it’s always  good to ask, because speaking from experience, if I hadn’t asked, I wouldn’t have found out about celebration samba, and I couldn’t have told you about all the wonderful  free to attend events going on in this part of the world

If you fancy Joining the band, have a look at their www and see if you can get along to rehearsals , full details and a Little history  are here and if you think it’s just ” 40 somethings like oldmanleslie “. no we have all ages  in the band.and its NOT  always about piracy.Mums, dads, grannies, granddads, father & sons, Generally people just having a good time entertaining people

For the blog,  my involvement with  the band
has cost me to buy kit and rehearse, however it has shown me that there  are so many carnivals and free events that are typically  English around the country, its still a good  ( and noisy if you are drumming ) place to be.

“see you at the pirate day , be sure to come and say HI “

Trying a new place..and a new question

Popped into dunelm today..just for a sneaky latte when the ” Old man Leslie” clan. Went shopping. Like everywhere else like this it has a coffee shop. Unlike a lot of other places the Barista was up to the question” can you make me a nice coffee of your design that you haven’t made before”

A strange request, but the result is gorgeous.

Although you can’t taste pictures….

Any how,if you are out rainy day shopping in this part of the world, Brunch, coffee, lunch or otherwise  i would say  it was worth a visit

Can comment on prices as MrImage of stores ” oldmanleslie ” was treating me , but when its good, you tell people.

I cant even tell you what it was i had as i forgot to ask, its just to say that  it was refreshing to find a person  that was ” up for the challenge ”  and knew enough to make  ” a nice cup of coffee ”

I wonder if on the board one day they might put  ” awkward customers mystery coffee ” .

Chocolate workshop that was a christmas present

This 1 has got the potential to be a really nice afternoon i was given a Christmas present last year of some off-road driving which didn’t suit me soIMAG0999[1] i looked for something else on the buyagift.com website
managed to trade quite an easy transaction

We went to the Langdon hotel in hove
A little surprised to have no parking, but worth knowing £5 for 11 hours…and just off the seafront.

Nice IMAG0993[1]enough facilities so far…£5 for a couple of coffees while waiting so again, not too bad…IMAG1002[1]

The whole thing about truffles, is that they are very rich, and i have to say that  i don’t actually like the taste of what i made, but the important part is the workshop was such a lot of fun , a great exercise in meeting people. sharing. having a chuckle

I would recommend  the workshops to any one for the above and if you like chocolate ( or like me , you think you do  ) then its a great session IMAG1000[1]

The package that we had, or as close as i can find to it is  here

Sorry about the pictures, all i can say is i had sticky fingers  and it wasn’t easy  taking them

first one of the Holidays…in future i will take pictures

image

its the weekend, and its sunny, and its the school hols. so why not. suddenly realising that KFC portions are getting smaller  if you don’t ” go large” and they are candidates for the  ” nice enough tasting, but looks nothing like the picture ” 1st prize

I looked at the picture  of what i thought i was getting,  and realised  when my food came out , one main reason why Bloggers  take pictures of their food. What i got was nothing at all like the picture.

Over the summer holidays we are  going to be in a few different places so i guess we will get to see  if  its just a local thing to the Bognor Regis drive through  ” near halfords ” that should be avoided  if you are here on holidays

Today, our lovely town held a summer carnival based on a Pirate theme and we were all for a wonderful surprise when Jack Sparrow himself landed (or more like it, was hoisted) from his modern day Black Pearl – read speed boat – to the delight of all, big and small.

The event started at 11.45 am, courtesy of Spirit FM West Sussex, outside the Regis Centre and Alexandra Theatre, and we were kindly advised to look out at sea for the momentous event. We obediently followed and were rewarded with the arrival of the most famous (should that be infamous?) pirate in the history of film making.

Such an Inspiration ……………………

Just a bit of catching up on the Blog to do this morning, so  a few things that have been  on my mind this week, Shall i clog up people’s emails with individual Blogs, or just drop it all into one Blog ?

So here it comes, a mixed up Blog  :

Firstly and most important to me , its  only a month  until me and my Boys go out for our annual  trip to good wood for a bit of a skate .  this year  we have been offered  help by  quite a few  people , all skating, Scooting  & wheeling in support of  littlehamptonshopmobility.co.uk.  we will be trying to live Blog  on the day , but I’m not promising , as it’s all about the Skating for me for one day  only.   And also that for the first time in a long time, there are 3 generations of ” oldmanleslie” including the proper one out for the day, doing good things, and having  fun

Like every thing else, there is of course a button  to if you want to support us  financially. Just click-through here

Second thing for the week.

We  all think that our dad is the best  in the world, they are always special to us for many reasons. Just because  “it’s all about the Sharing ” i am going to share with you  a little secret, My Dad IS the greatest in the world, I have absolutely  no doubt about that, But I’m pretty sure that i can tell you  who the Number 02 best  dad is as well,  This dad is a TRUE  inspiration , and if you dig around a little on the web  you will see why

Then , during the week i had a bit of a downer ,Nothing too serious , i just heard on local TV news about  thegooddeeddiary. this is a positive thing  that a guy in the UK  is doing and it is to be praised, the downer was the thought that followed, ” isn’t it a shame that this isn’t the ” norm ” any more ”  and wouldn’t it be good to get back to it . Possibly Luke Can Keep it going and inspire others around him. Good deeds don’t have to cost money, we can all do them , just even 1 a day

But i ended the week on a positive, and it wasn’t  a sneaky latte, or  a free day out, it wasn’t  even something that i had been sent from a  PR /company to review. it was because i went  last weekend  in the pouring rain to see  the boys and girls at malpass meats. I will send them a link  to  the blog, however i just thought it was worth  a mention that  the steak we got was  Mouth watering” cooked of course by Mrs Oldmanleslie” and  over the last 20 years of  buying from them  i have always had great  meat,  cracking service . you might in fact call it ” legendary ”

Not what i expected…………. But Brilliant

So last year , the maistre of the band i drum in Suggested that we had a ” trip out ” and some of you will have seen by blog about the Night. it was free, great, a lot of fun, and  an annual event . For me , on the night , apart from being with “ the band ” and not having to perform, it was being in Glastonbury, a quaint English town, and hearing  Sham 69 Blaring through the night

so its time to let the world know ( or at least the little bit of it that see’s my blog )

today , i am back again volunteering at  ” the shop ” and NOW  its just about 2 weeks to go untill our BIG fund raiser

“the shop ” being  Littlehampton Shop Mobility , I get here when i can to help out as  i think its good to try to do what you can , when you can, It’s not all about the Money, or the freebies. But as always ” its all about the sharing ”

Today  we have what looks like the first hint of a summer’s day  and i hope that we are busy , cos if we are that means that people  that have Mobility issues are  using us to get themselves out and about to enjoy the sun.

Also here preparing for  the South Coast roll, where this year a team of ” mad fools ”  will be trying to propel themselves on skates, skateboards, in wheel chairs  and anything else they can find that isn’t motorized or pedaled , around good wood motor circuit  in Chichester ( West Sussex UK)

So why do i want to tell you this, well here comes the punchline……

We are doing it all in aid of the shop to raise funds to buy vital resources to help the local community. So I hope you will tell all your friends about  us, and maybe find it possible to support us

There will be pictures from this years event posted of course, but here are  some of our star skaters & Imageboarders from last years  attempt  when we raised in excess of £500  Image

There is a Facebook page for our efforts  and we will update as we get closer to the event

Image

Thanks for having a look and i hope you can see why we wanted to share this with you , I’m proud of my sons that are both doing their bit, just because they can, I’m grateful to  those with ” mobility issues ) family and friends. and its amazing to see that people will still come out and give up their time to support  a great cause

Possibly the nicest coffee i have ever had …..

So I like a sneaky latte, there’s no issue with that , I and I will continue to hunt down the best  one on my travels. I MAY have stumbled across the perfect recipe  though so I thought I would share…..

A Big old Mug ( with a nice big circumference  that takes to hands to hold ) for that warm  fuzzy feeling…. A big old slug of  ” THE MAGICAL INGREDIENT  FOR ANY COFFEE “ In this case lemon Meringue   syrup. And yes, im sorry i didn’t measure exactly ,

A good old fashioned Tassimo  coffee pod, run twice through the machine  just to getCARTE NOIRE Expresso  the extra strength  for the Mix , With a large Latte  portion , again run twice  through  the machine

I don’t know  if it was just the ingredients, or the Delicate way  I stirred it (  who am I kidding )  but  it was lovely, and  for a large coffee with syrup, I worked out it only cost about 60p

Tassimo & Monin are 2 names that definitely go well together and I will be telling them so

Get kids thinking about spaceships, aliens , rockets and the like …..

What a great thing to inspire kids imaginations

NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission and The Planetary Society invite you to submit your name for a round-trip ride to asteroid Bennu. Your name will hitch a ride to the asteroid, spend 500 days there, and return in the Sample Return Capsule to Earth in 2023.

Plus your name will be on the spacecraft, which will remain in space long after returning the sample return capsule to Earth.

Nothing to lose and it’s an awesome thing to do!

You can also print off a Certificate to show your kids

So this one has to be a bit special….and it really is

To those that follow my blog, thank you . you will know i haven’t been doing this for very long. You may also appreciate that im not the best at blogging yet. but i am at a significant milestone for “oldmanlesliesblog” so i thought I would use this as an opportunity for something that brings all the areas i mention  together .

I drum,I skate , I let you know if something is good, i support UK manufacturing ‘cos i work for one   , and i love gadgets. So when i went skating  last week  and i saw all the people who were using Lights on their Skates I was impressed.

My first thought  was ” wow that would look great  on my drum ( and yes, i know that’s really sad, but i cant skate as well as the boys & girls that were wearing the lights )

It was weird  because lots of people had them, some  were  quite bright, and were static colours, Some were changing colours automatically  and seemed to me to be a lot brighter…. I did  some digging around and confirmed that in fact these were made by one of the guys at our skate club. so having seen them in action.  I thought I would get me a pair for my drum . I guess these lights can be used just about any where and that is testament to a good product in that it has more than 1 use . There is a www site  for these  which is http://www.skatelight.co.uk/  where you can find out more.

I know its unusual to blog about a product before you receive it  but having seen these working, i am so looking forward to receiving mine ( which i have paid for , this  is not a sponsored blog )

It simply unites all the key areas of my blog  and i hope you like it

its local to west Sussex with global potential  , built and designed by a Uk Manufacturer ,  a great gadget , Quality product,  & therefore , it’s all about sharing, when something is this good

and if there are other Skate parts you need

Something Good, Sustainable and low-cost

What a refreshingly good Story to see.

Simon Dale is a family man in Wales,

His interest in self-sustainability and an ecological awareness led him to dig out and build his own home—one of the loveliest, warmest, most inviting dwellings you could ever imagine. And it cost him only £3,000, about $4,700 American dollars!

Can you imagine a more charming entrance than this?Man Builds Fairy Tale Home for His Family – Total Cost £3,000 - Hobbit Home

Simon gives two reasons for building the home. The first elegant one, from his website, is: “It’s fun. Living your own life, in your own way is rewarding. Following our dreams keeps our souls alive.” His second reason is a plea for sustainability, in which he states that “our supplies are dwindling and our planet is in ecological catastrophe”. You can read the full and passionate statement here. Simon is also a photographer, and as you can see throughout this article, a talented one. A beautiful view in another home that Simon is helping build for someone else. (Originally, this was mistakenly identified as a photo of the home he and his family are living in.) The tools are fairly simple.Man Builds Fairy Tale Home for His Family – Total Cost £3,000 - Hobbit Home Interior The main concession to modernity was a chainsaw, which he used to cut down about 30 small trees. No old growth forest fell to his family’s needs. He focused on tools that used his own energy, like shovel, chisel, and hammer. Yet it took him only four months to produce this lovely home. The home is constructed from wood, stone, straw, and has a sod roof. It’s heated with a wood fireplace and has a solar panel for power. Most materials were scavenged and refurbished appliances. The effect, though, isn’t of a run-down get-by-with-second-best . It’s creative, artistic, elegant, and cozy. It is, in fact, magical. Most amazingly, the home didn’t require years of training or experience. Simon had none. He’s not an architect. He’s not an engineer. He’s not a carpenter. He started from scratch in every sense. He told the Daily Mail: “Being your own have-a-go architect is a lot of fun and allows you to create and enjoy something which is part of yourself and the land rather than, at worst, a mass-produced box designed for maximum profit and the convenience of the construction industry.” Building from natural materials does away with producers’ profits and the cocktail of carcinogenic poisons that fill most modern buildings. He was fortunate in obtaining the land for his home. The plot, a bit of a large piece, was given to him in exchange for its caretaking. Simon Dale, his wife Jasmine Saville, and their two children in front of their completed home just 4 months after starting it! This and all photos on this page are by Simon Dale (http://simondale.net). The attention to making the home eco-friendly extends to a compost toilet, the use of straw over a plastic layer for insulation, and a refrigerator that’s cooled with air that flows from under the home’s foundation. Cement is a high carbon emitter, so the interior walls are finished with lime plaster instead of cement plaster. Simon is now involved in building another home for the Lammas Project, an organization dedicated to low-impact building. Focus is not only on the homes themselves, but also on planting trees and gardens, and on low impact living in general. Here’s how he sums up his view on his home and the Lammas Project: This building is one part of a low-impact or permaculture approach to life. This sort of life is about living in harmony with both the natural world and ourselves, doing things simply and using appropriate levels of technology. These sort of low-cost, natural buildings have a place not only in their own sustainability, but also in their potential to provide affordable housing which allows people access to land and the opportunity to lead more simple, sustainable lives. I cannot imagine a home more lovely, appealing, and livable than this one. This could be and should be the wave of the future in home building. For more information about Simon Dale’s home, plans, and more photos, please go to his website, A Low Impact Woodland Home. Pagham Beach Update

It seems as if the weather is not  easing .

An update on my earlier blog

Pagham beach closed after sea defences were breached

A beach has been cordoned off after strong tides breached recently completed sea defences.

Solent Coastguard said flood defences at Pagham beach had been breached and part of the shingle bank washed away.

People have been urged to keep away from the area which is very dangerous, a spokesman said.

Arun council was responsible for the sea defence which was completed in December

Large areas of the shingle bank and large boulders, which all formed part of the flood defence scheme, have been washed away over the past week in the poor weather.

This should not be allowed to happen, it’s the pupils that suffer

I don’t know where you stand on the whole   State / Private / Academy  debate. im sure there are plus points  for each. This is an Academy local to  me and it seems that from the information in the article that as a result of a head master leaving his post, the kids at this place will  undoubtedly suffer  with the disruption that this will cause.Steve Jewell with pupils at the Littlehampton Academy

Why can this be allowed to happen, Aren’t the high school years  tough enough on children

Any how, that’s my rant over for the day

For Local peeps ( west Sussex ) , but hopefully it wont last too long

For any one local to west Sussex , it looks like its going to get worse  before it clears

as below from the BBC website   5 January 2014 Last updated at 11:44

A beach in West Sussex has been cordoned off after strong tides breached sea defences.

Solent Coastguard said flood defences at Pagham Beach, near Chichester, had been breached and part of the shingle bank washed away.

People have been urged to keep away from the area which is very dangerous, a spokesman said.

Coastguards, police, the Environment Agency and Arun council were at the scene overnight.

Road closed

“The safety message from all the agencies is that this is a hazardous area and there is no reason for members of the public to be down there,” a coastguard spokesman said.

BBC reporter Simon Jenkins said large areas of the shingle bank and large boulders, which all formed part of a recently completed flood defence scheme, had been washed away over the past week.

Travel reports said Harbour Road, near Lagoon Road, had been closed because of coastal flooding.

Other parts of the Sussex coastline have seen cliffs collapse during storms and tidal surges.

A 9ft (3m) stretch of cliff at Birling Gap went into the sea on Saturday, and part of a cliff collapsed into the waves at Rock-a-Nore, near Hastings, on Friday.

The Environment Agency has warned the south coast remains at risk of coastal flooding throughout the weekend and early into next week.

Valentines Day Update , Its getting  silly down  in this part of the world, it seems a s though this little part of Sussex has been forgotten as it’s not  ” on Thames ”

That is not to detract from the horrible things people in the ” Surrey / Middlesex ” area are experiencing, or the  ongoing horrible  things in the west country ,
