I saw it, i asked about it and it gives me a smile every time I go

So as we approach Christmas 2016

Not to sure if I should use the text above for this  as it’s really a review of  what has been a great  year for me   ( band wise  )  and  there are still events to come this year . I have the pleasure of performing with  Celebration Samba, a band based in   West Sussex . The band has been around for a while, in fact next year will be our 14th year   and  it seems to get better  every year . So I wanted to tell some key people  about it , and a blog seemed to be the best idea.

We play most weekends  between palm Sunday  & Christmas,  we are sometimes  at more than one event in a day  ( what it is to be popular )  and  generally all the drummers have a great time.  sometimes its a cultural event, sometimes its a carnival , a party , a summer fair , a Christmas celebration, we turn up and drum.

Its my involvement with the band that has taken me to so many places, dressed me up in fancy dress, made me smile, and  really enjoy something that other people seem to enjoy me doing .  So why blog about it, well, the band has shown me that  it’s not just the ” big & shiny ” events that are fun,

And in a couple of weeks we get to support  the ladies that are behind the  sea of lights . this is a community event that  Logohas become a regular event, great for kids , families and those who like a traditional  ” feel good ” day .They  even have the #adursol2016

This year  we hope to have some dancers with us at this event  from the MSDC ( MartaScottDanceCompany )

Then we have the Christmas celebrations in Littlehampton  to ” bring in  to the town “.

We Provided the music and lessons for around 400 Guides as part of the Olympics this year

But don’t think  that it’s just small gigs,  this year has also seen oldmanleslie, don his pirate  wig, use his best AAAAARRRRRRRand attend Hastings Pirate day 2016.

We also lead out the Worthing carnival Again in the summer , what an excellent day that was

a bit of an insight into Me......

a bit of an insight into Me……

So I guess the main point of the blog, is that  if like me you are at a carnival procession ( big or small)and you see something that looks like fun, it’s always  good to ask, because speaking from experience, if I hadn’t asked, I wouldn’t have found out about celebration samba, and I couldn’t have told you about all the wonderful  free to attend events going on in this part of the world

If you fancy Joining the band, have a look at their www and see if you can get along to rehearsals , full details and a Little history  are here and if you think it’s just ” 40 somethings like oldmanleslie “. 10616680_10152272119731962_9041637334396140655_nno we have all ages  in the band. Mums, dads, grannies, granddads, father & sons, Generally people just having a good time entertaining people

As my involvement with  the band  has cost me to buy kit and rehearse, it has also shown me that there  are so many carnivals and free events that are typically  English around the country, its still a good  ( and noisy if you are drumming ) place to be

A Great Free event -2 of 3 ( UK Family Based ) – Glastonbury Illuminated carnival

So as we approach ChristmasIMG_20141115_203501593_HDR  and all the  usual costs  it brings, I just thought I would let you know about 3  freebies  that  me and the ” oldmanleslie Clan ”  found  this autumn. events  that  are free to attend, some small, some absolutely huge . all good fun, all based in the south

This blog is about the  ” HUGE EVENT ” , possibly one of the largest free events in the UK

10418510_661824977266208_8867408709940287138_n

it’s an event that  the Carnival clubs in the area  have been  doing  for many years and I have to say , they are pretty good at it

This is held, as the name suggests in Glastonbury  ( Somerset ) and forms part of the  group of Carnival Clubs  in the area that operate a ” circuit ” during the autumn , they come together in Glastonbury for the season Finale

It’s a great  event, with music, Thousands IMG_20141115_201102096and thousands of lights  and all the great  independent shops of Glastonbury ,  and all the usual  fair rides  etc ( these Charge ) there should be a load of pictures available

There are organisations parading that  are collecting for all sorts of charities ,  I guess  the only problem with trying to Blog about how good something thatIMG_20141115_214218968_HDR is such a sensory  overload, is that  the pictures just don’t do it justice
Any way, it’s a free to attend event, it’s a great  night  out for families, so I thought I would  pass it on , as always there is a Facebook page that you can like , so you  know when next years event will be . also there are the links on the FB to the various  videos etc

This is the second year we have been, as last years was good ( heres the review )  we didn’t think it could get any more fun ………..But it did

“What a real ” WOW ” of a place, with just the right amount of ” just what was needed “”

What an excellent place for a family meal, we went to celebrate a bit of an occasion for us . the Buffet was excellent
, the food was fresh, presented beautifully . Drinks were a little expensive, but not too overpriced in my opinion ( remember this is Dubai and it’s just not the same as the UK or Europe ) . the rose for my wife was a pleasant surprise , as was the very tasty gift .At the Burj

Our youngest son wasn’t charged for his ” drink of choice ” at all.

I accept that  normally  now  you have to pay a lot for good service, well at the burj,  I can say that i don’t think i paid anything like the level of excellent service  we received

A very special thank you to” Mohit ” as he prepared a dish especially for my son. Yes, the main chef in a world-class restaurant took and 8-year-old child ” fully a la carte ”  this really made an impression on my son

also to

“Ivan”, one of the senior management team. who was kind enough to take time out of his day to come and talk to us. and arranged a personal tour of the hotel,

and also to

the waiter  who went way beyond the call of duty  and ” played ” with my son  out on the beach in the evening as my son said it was a little cold in the restaurant.

The staff even  managed to explain WHY  this is a 7  star hotel

The staff in the restaurant and the hotel have an obvious pride in what they do , and it shows. Even the  things inside the hotel are worth a few minutes to watch

It is so very easy to see why this restaurant should well be one of the best in the world

Located  on the  Ground floor, Burj Al Arab | PO Box 74147, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Thank you to Ivan and his team

So this one makes me sad….

as reported on www.bbc.co.uk/news  I think this  is a wrong choice by the BBC, Charts should be based on sales, where s  the fun in clinically clicking a button for your music, maybe I’m too ” old ” Oldmanleslie.

it was fun buying vinyl, it felt good. it still sounds better and it looks good ( only my opinion)

but here’s the rational argument. For example, one of my old faves. I have this  behind me on a cd, and somewhere on an old vinyl. bought in shops, so I assume I have paid my fees to the artist. And therefore I can listen to it on some service for free.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBUT0cxtHlgBastille

but if all I pay is to stream the track and listen when I want, I don’t own a copy out right. so if this is the thin end of the wedge, will there one day only be streamed music available ..

rant over , let me know what you though of the old classic

Not much to blog about today ……

Other than I am so  very proud of  Number 01 son and his team  from Arctic Fox  ESU. Who have spent  the weekend  Taking part in the  ” overland Hike  ” . they have been out overnight in  the middle of the south-downs, they took everything they needed with them including food and a means of cooking it . Overland_Logo_new.png

2 boys and 2 girls in My sons team and  they finished it  in good time ( better than some that didn’t )

Some times Kids to-day get a bad reputation  that they don’t deserve, All I can say is thanks to the leaders of the Cub / Scout / Beavers & explorers packs that we have locally. The time they put in  is amazing, the experiences they give the kids, The way they get  kids thinking for themselves at a young age.

The commitment that means they see it through and keep going.

Thanks to  the team that my  son went  through with, and Most of all

Well Done Son

Binky’s Cake House …… what a great find, and even nicer cakes

So there i was earlier in the year looking for a Unique  thing to get ” Mrs oldmanleslie” for her Birthday.  we have been together a little while now  so  sometimes its hard to come up with a special idea. This year , it was easy, I was told about “Binky’s Cake House “ by a friend of Mine .

I was told they made special Birthday cakes and cakes for special occasions. so i had a chat with ” binky “( not her real name ), told the lady  what i wanted and pretty much left her to it . The result was a truly scrumptious cake that tasted gorgeous, made to my wife’s choice , and that looked even better, The picture doesn’t do it Justice, it was ” proper 3D ”

Now I know there are a lot of mums out there that make cakes for people , and im not saying  anything about their standards, all i can say is that the cake i paid for from Binkys was excellent value and for sheer delight for the look on my wife’s face it was worth every penny

Binkys are also a bit special as they can accommodate  Most dietary requirements, They Are a start-up business and they are so keen to do a good job. for you

They have a www presence, and aren’t Just on Face Book and you can see some of their handy work here  This is NOT a sponsored  blog, i paid for the Cake and am so glad i found them, If its something that little bit special you need , Binkys is the way

Freebies are always good ….

Could be just the thing for  just about any  one really,

Mums, dads, Kiddies, Homes, shops, Parents…..

I will let you know how good they are  when mine turn up

So this one has to be a bit special….and it really is

To those that follow my blog, thank you . you will know i haven’t been doing this for very long. You may also appreciate that im not the best at blogging yet. but i am at a significant milestone for “oldmanlesliesblog” so i thought I would use this as an opportunity for something that brings all the areas i mention  together .

I drum,I skate , I let you know if something is good, i support UK manufacturing ‘cos i work for one   , and i love gadgets. So when i went skating  last week  and i saw all the people who were using Lights on their Skates I was impressed.

My first thought  was ” wow that would look great  on my drum ( and yes, i know that’s really sad, but i cant skate as well as the boys & girls that were wearing the lights )

It was weird  because lots of people had them, some  were  quite bright, and were static colours, Some were changing colours automatically  and seemed to me to be a lot brighter…. I did  some digging around and confirmed that in fact these were made by one of the guys at our skate club. so having seen them in action.  I thought I would get me a pair for my drum . I guess these lights can be used just about any where and that is testament to a good product in that it has more than 1 use . There is a www site  for these  which is http://www.skatelight.co.uk/  where you can find out more.

I know its unusual to blog about a product before you receive it  but having seen these working, i am so looking forward to receiving mine ( which i have paid for , this  is not a sponsored blog )

It simply unites all the key areas of my blog  and i hope you like it

its local to west Sussex with global potential  , built and designed by a Uk Manufacturer ,  a great gadget , Quality product,  & therefore , it’s all about sharing, when something is this good

and if there are other Skate parts you need

Something Good, Sustainable and low-cost

What a refreshingly good Story to see.

Simon Dale is a family man in Wales,

His interest in self-sustainability and an ecological awareness led him to dig out and build his own home—one of the loveliest, warmest, most inviting dwellings you could ever imagine. And it cost him only £3,000, about $4,700 American dollars!

Can you imagine a more charming entrance than this?Man Builds Fairy Tale Home for His Family – Total Cost £3,000 - Hobbit Home

Simon gives two reasons for building the home. The first elegant one, from his website, is: “It’s fun. Living your own life, in your own way is rewarding. Following our dreams keeps our souls alive.” His second reason is a plea for sustainability, in which he states that “our supplies are dwindling and our planet is in ecological catastrophe”. You can read the full and passionate statement here. Simon is also a photographer, and as you can see throughout this article, a talented one. A beautiful view in another home that Simon is helping build for someone else. (Originally, this was mistakenly identified as a photo of the home he and his family are living in.) The tools are fairly simple.Man Builds Fairy Tale Home for His Family – Total Cost £3,000 - Hobbit Home Interior The main concession to modernity was a chainsaw, which he used to cut down about 30 small trees. No old growth forest fell to his family’s needs. He focused on tools that used his own energy, like shovel, chisel, and hammer. Yet it took him only four months to produce this lovely home. The home is constructed from wood, stone, straw, and has a sod roof. It’s heated with a wood fireplace and has a solar panel for power. Most materials were scavenged and refurbished appliances. The effect, though, isn’t of a run-down get-by-with-second-best . It’s creative, artistic, elegant, and cozy. It is, in fact, magical. Most amazingly, the home didn’t require years of training or experience. Simon had none. He’s not an architect. He’s not an engineer. He’s not a carpenter. He started from scratch in every sense. He told the Daily Mail: “Being your own have-a-go architect is a lot of fun and allows you to create and enjoy something which is part of yourself and the land rather than, at worst, a mass-produced box designed for maximum profit and the convenience of the construction industry.” Building from natural materials does away with producers’ profits and the cocktail of carcinogenic poisons that fill most modern buildings. He was fortunate in obtaining the land for his home. The plot, a bit of a large piece, was given to him in exchange for its caretaking. Simon Dale, his wife Jasmine Saville, and their two children in front of their completed home just 4 months after starting it! This and all photos on this page are by Simon Dale (http://simondale.net). The attention to making the home eco-friendly extends to a compost toilet, the use of straw over a plastic layer for insulation, and a refrigerator that’s cooled with air that flows from under the home’s foundation. Cement is a high carbon emitter, so the interior walls are finished with lime plaster instead of cement plaster. Simon is now involved in building another home for the Lammas Project, an organization dedicated to low-impact building. Focus is not only on the homes themselves, but also on planting trees and gardens, and on low impact living in general. Here’s how he sums up his view on his home and the Lammas Project: This building is one part of a low-impact or permaculture approach to life. This sort of life is about living in harmony with both the natural world and ourselves, doing things simply and using appropriate levels of technology. These sort of low-cost, natural buildings have a place not only in their own sustainability, but also in their potential to provide affordable housing which allows people access to land and the opportunity to lead more simple, sustainable lives. I cannot imagine a home more lovely, appealing, and livable than this one. This could be and should be the wave of the future in home building. For more information about Simon Dale’s home, plans, and more photos, please go to his website, A Low Impact Woodland Home. Old school is always the best way ……..

So today, it was proved to me that ” old School ” is the best way…. we heard from an old Friend of the family a couple of weeks ago that there was a local event that she would like to go to. Just to say the lady involved has no email , no PC, No smart phone. No internet access, She had seen an advert ” printed ” in a local Parish type Magazine

We knew it would be a nice day out with a friend any

sparks

way so off we went to the event… I of course had tried to find it on the www the night before & couldnt so my expectations werent High …

The event was brilliant, a proper local event but on a big scale. all sorts of things going on. we particularly liked the soprano singer . The tree was magnificent

It looks also like it’s an annual event so roll on 2014

Any one who follows the Blog will know from the summer that i know a couple of good places to go in Arundel for that illusive Latte, well today we were on our way to take our friend to our favorite

When almost like a little voice at the side of the road ( or was it that i saw the sign ) i was drawn to what turned out to be the BEST BROWNIE I HAVE EVER EATEN sage

so a great day out generally, a smashing lunch, thanks to the team at sparks yard

What a great Thing for someone who has been driving for 20+ Years

Earlier this year whilst looking around the WWW, I came across an offer on HUKD for a spot of Driver ” training “. like most of the prematurely Silver surfers out there that find these sorts of things and think its brilliant, I clicked to investigate it.

I drive as part of my Job, Not millions of Miles a year, but enough for me and more than some would want, I’m lucky that i have a Great car. At Christmas, i don’t always mind being the Duty driver

Any way, back to the training, i set up the account, and waited to hear back, it only Took about 2-3 days then I met Wendy , the driving instructor you can Contact her via mirror

This lady was amazing, i thought i was obviously the best driver on the road, and that i drove perfectly, car Turns out there is room for improvement and on a 2 hour session Wendy managed to Point out so many little Things i was doing that could be improved, it really spurred me on. This year i will be asking Santa for an IAM membership and i will keep you posted  on how that goes I can only imagine that if you were 17 and looking for a Great teacher to show you How to drive , as opposed to just getting you through your test, Wendy would be one of the best.car2

and you just know its going to last

Over the years I have Bought many things from Marks & Spencer’s. I know that they  are not always the cheapest, but their  food is always nice, their clothes always last well and the other things i have bought have always lasted wellFreya Footstool

So when you see a nice offer that appears to be  in time for Christmas that they have put out, it only seems right to share it . I accept its Not a review of a product but simply  what i have found to be a great supplier

And a saving is after all, always a saving
