I saw it, i asked about it and it gives me a smile every time I go

So as we approach Christmas 2016

Not to sure if I should use the text above for this  as it’s really a review of  what has been a great  year for me   ( band wise  )  and  there are still events to come this year . I have the pleasure of performing with  Celebration Samba, a band based in   West Sussex . The band has been around for a while, in fact next year will be our 14th year   and  it seems to get better  every year . So I wanted to tell some key people  about it , and a blog seemed to be the best idea.

We play most weekends  between palm Sunday  & Christmas,  we are sometimes  at more than one event in a day  ( what it is to be popular )  and  generally all the drummers have a great time.  sometimes its a cultural event, sometimes its a carnival , a party , a summer fair , a Christmas celebration, we turn up and drum.

Its my involvement with the band that has taken me to so many places, dressed me up in fancy dress, made me smile, and  really enjoy something that other people seem to enjoy me doing .  So why blog about it, well, the band has shown me that  it’s not just the ” big & shiny ” events that are fun,

And in a couple of weeks we get to support  the ladies that are behind the  sea of lights . this is a community event that  Logohas become a regular event, great for kids , families and those who like a traditional  ” feel good ” day .They  even have the #adursol2016

This year  we hope to have some dancers with us at this event  from the MSDC ( MartaScottDanceCompany )

Then we have the Christmas celebrations in Littlehampton  to ” bring in  to the town “.

We Provided the music and lessons for around 400 Guides as part of the Olympics this year

But don’t think  that it’s just small gigs,  this year has also seen oldmanleslie, don his pirate  wig, use his best AAAAARRRRRRRand attend Hastings Pirate day 2016.

We also lead out the Worthing carnival Again in the summer , what an excellent day that was

a bit of an insight into Me......

a bit of an insight into Me……

So I guess the main point of the blog, is that  if like me you are at a carnival procession ( big or small)and you see something that looks like fun, it’s always  good to ask, because speaking from experience, if I hadn’t asked, I wouldn’t have found out about celebration samba, and I couldn’t have told you about all the wonderful  free to attend events going on in this part of the world

If you fancy Joining the band, have a look at their www and see if you can get along to rehearsals , full details and a Little history  are here and if you think it’s just ” 40 somethings like oldmanleslie “. 10616680_10152272119731962_9041637334396140655_nno we have all ages  in the band. Mums, dads, grannies, granddads, father & sons, Generally people just having a good time entertaining people

As my involvement with  the band  has cost me to buy kit and rehearse, it has also shown me that there  are so many carnivals and free events that are typically  English around the country, its still a good  ( and noisy if you are drumming ) place to be

A Great Free event -2 of 3 ( UK Family Based ) – Glastonbury Illuminated carnival

So as we approach ChristmasIMG_20141115_203501593_HDR  and all the  usual costs  it brings, I just thought I would let you know about 3  freebies  that  me and the ” oldmanleslie Clan ”  found  this autumn. events  that  are free to attend, some small, some absolutely huge . all good fun, all based in the south

This blog is about the  ” HUGE EVENT ” , possibly one of the largest free events in the UK

10418510_661824977266208_8867408709940287138_n

it’s an event that  the Carnival clubs in the area  have been  doing  for many years and I have to say , they are pretty good at it

This is held, as the name suggests in Glastonbury  ( Somerset ) and forms part of the  group of Carnival Clubs  in the area that operate a ” circuit ” during the autumn , they come together in Glastonbury for the season Finale

It’s a great  event, with music, Thousands IMG_20141115_201102096and thousands of lights  and all the great  independent shops of Glastonbury ,  and all the usual  fair rides  etc ( these Charge ) there should be a load of pictures available

There are organisations parading that  are collecting for all sorts of charities ,  I guess  the only problem with trying to Blog about how good something thatIMG_20141115_214218968_HDR is such a sensory  overload, is that  the pictures just don’t do it justice
Any way, it’s a free to attend event, it’s a great  night  out for families, so I thought I would  pass it on , as always there is a Facebook page that you can like , so you  know when next years event will be . also there are the links on the FB to the various  videos etc

This is the second year we have been, as last years was good ( heres the review )  we didn’t think it could get any more fun ………..But it did

Strange concept, but what a great find …James Guest House – Coleshill

Once again, up to the NEC for business this week , and had to find a place for the night, My boss found this place, what can i say about it.

Here goes

Apart from the bad traffic which wasn’t down to the accommodation, the place was clean, comfy, well equipped and had all i needed for a Night away

I was in the room ” Janice ” and there was beds for 3. this is a www based pic , but it is exactly as my room was James Guest House

A clean en suite shower room with a decent shower

Off road parking not a problem .

And the idea of ” self service ” for breakfast, and indeed anything you needed was brilliant

what a great place to stay and if you want, there are more pictures

what a great little place, in a lovely little village -” jerichos”

On a late summers afternoon, when you are strolling through a large village , and you see the usual brands of Tesco, costa, boots, whsmith and a few others, you might be surprised to see a little independent shop  doing so well, …. well we found  Jerichos. What a great little place, not only selling sweets  that i hadn’t seen for ages, but selling some of the imported stuff that you just cant get in the UK . The village is rustington in west Sussex its a quaint place but im not sure if village does it justice for its size.

There is plenty of parking, plenty of shops , and most importantly plenty of places to look around..Any way back to Jerichos. Great selection to choose from . Prices not too bad  ( £1.00 for a can of cherry dr pepper )  which i  don’t think was too badIMAG0859 . Gave the boys the modern equivalent of  a few pennies they could spend, as I’m not one of those dads that takes kids to places then says they can’t have this or that . and let them go and choose the bits they wanted  .I’m not to  sure about the ” yoo hoo” but it sounded nice.

Sorry I cant give you pics of what the boys had, it’s all been scoffed ( I suppose it doesn’t hurt once in a while )

But one thing I did get which I have been looking for  for ages, is the  bag that has the descriptions of the jelly IMAG0860beans from Jelly Belly  so I can now  get started on the pot I got given earlier in the year that  had no flavours listed on them

Any way, like all good businesses there is a www for  jerichos   and of course , a face book and all the usual  tweet stuff, I just thought that in the spirit of having found somewhere nice , I would share with you , I have not been sponsored for this blog

Fish Finger Sarnies & a root beer float …….So this ones an important Blog for me, Where to spend the hard earned Pennies

Don’t worry, oldmanleslie isn’t about to go and get  all serious, well not overnight any way. For the first time in my blog, there is conflict ., ( shock horror )

I’m based in  west Sussex, and this time  of year, we are blessed with a lot of sunshine, so days out , at the shops, on the beach, an evening stroll along an almost deserted prom ,
and yes that really is our local prom and the sunsets are that good

and at the end of the prom you find

The Lobster pot.

There are many reasons to go here  on a sunny day in summer, or for a refreshing  autumn stroll. And i have blogged  about it before

One reason to go is the Amazing Fish Finger Sandwiches, that they do. I suppose i am ” not very wellinformedoldmanleslie” but i didn’t know you could get these…. so to find them on my doorstep was  a bit of a coup

Putting the Lobster-pot  aside for a moment, I was keen to  see what the good people at sparks yard had done to improve their offering  in Arundel. Now i know some bloggers only review freebies, well that’s not the way it works with “oldmanleslie”  its nice to get freebies of course, however  why should business  have to fork out for  opinions…..Any how  Back to the loft

Mrs Oldmanleslie and I Parked ” down by the river ” in Arundel, and had a nice stroll   along the banks of the river , up through  Arundel. avoiding the  multiple coach loads of students & visitors to the castle…. and there it was, clearly visible  from the end of Tarrant street

so now the facts, Easy access to the shop , although parking in Arundel needs looking at . easy  wheelchair access to all floors of the shop  and restaurant  via their own lift,  Always  clean inside.  loftWell refurbished  top floor restaurant that we tried to just pop into. we were soon asked if ” are you Chris ”  and shown to the reserved Table  by the window that they had ” reserved for us ”  I have to say Mrsoldmanleslie liked that ”  We were served well,  quickly but not  invasively . and  we were left to order our food. After a nice chat with what turned out to be one of the owners

” stop, Hammer time “

for the  first time as a blogger  i should have taken a picture of something i was about to consume , ( I didn’t )  so you will have to believe me that £2.50 for a drink  was the best value in a long time. Imported root beer that you can buy in the shop , used to make an ice cream float, with a curly straw, now that’s the taste of childhood .

A quick look down the menu for food, and there it was. The fish finger sandwich….. so apologies to Andrew and the team, I’m sure that everything else on the menu was fine, and maybe we will  be back soon to try it, however that’s a favourite with all us Leslie’s, so  there in lies the dilemma

Go for what you know, and now have a choice of venues that both serve excellent  food, or risk going off “Piste ” and getting something you don’t like ?

We are going to have to go back and find out i guess, it certainly wont be a hard choice and when a place is just that little bit too far away  to walk to, it makes it all the more special to be well looked after  by them.

So I can’t take credit for the images ( taken from the www)   and i cant  take credit for the effect on the waistline ( that’s  your responsibility
however Either way, if you are in west Sussex for holidays and looking . Just remember
On the beach in Felpham = The lobster-pot
Shopping and  touristy things in Arundel  = Sparks yard  / The loft
Either way ” the fish finger sandwiches are excellent,” and the root beer  just seals the decision  for me

it just gets better…..

Just a short  blog today , it turns out through all the various Channels of sponsorship and donations, the boys and girls that Skated / Scooted and otherwise for Littlehampton Shopmobility  raised well over the original target they were aiming for . so  if you saw the earlier blog and sponsored us , Thank you

If you want to help a local Charity, you can still donate at  this link
Also, as a follow-up , it seems the good people  at Sparks Yard
in Arundel are also running  a weekly give away in the run up to the opening of ” the loft ”

The Sun is shinning in Sussex, the people are out in littlehampton, The forecast isn’t too bad for tomorrow …..all in all, not a bad part of the world to be in today

Such an Inspiration ……………………

Just a bit of catching up on the Blog to do this morning, so  a few things that have been  on my mind this week, Shall i clog up people’s emails with individual Blogs, or just drop it all into one Blog ?

So here it comes, a mixed up Blog  :

Firstly and most important to me , its  only a month  until me and my Boys go out for our annual  trip to good wood for a bit of a skate .  this year  we have been offered  help by  quite a few  people , all skating, Scooting  & wheeling in support of  littlehamptonshopmobility.co.uk.  we will be trying to live Blog  on the day , but I’m not promising , as it’s all about the Skating for me for one day  only.   And also that for the first time in a long time, there are 3 generations of ” oldmanleslie” including the proper one out for the day, doing good things, and having  fun

Like every thing else, there is of course a button  to if you want to support us  financially. Just click-through here

Second thing for the week.

We  all think that our dad is the best  in the world, they are always special to us for many reasons. Just because  “it’s all about the Sharing ” i am going to share with you  a little secret, My Dad IS the greatest in the world, I have absolutely  no doubt about that, But I’m pretty sure that i can tell you  who the Number 02 best  dad is as well,  This dad is a TRUE  inspiration , and if you dig around a little on the web  you will see why

Then , during the week i had a bit of a downer ,Nothing too serious , i just heard on local TV news about  thegooddeeddiary. this is a positive thing  that a guy in the UK  is doing and it is to be praised, the downer was the thought that followed, ” isn’t it a shame that this isn’t the ” norm ” any more ”  and wouldn’t it be good to get back to it . Possibly Luke Can Keep it going and inspire others around him. Good deeds don’t have to cost money, we can all do them , just even 1 a day

But i ended the week on a positive, and it wasn’t  a sneaky latte, or  a free day out, it wasn’t  even something that i had been sent from a  PR /company to review. it was because i went  last weekend  in the pouring rain to see  the boys and girls at malpass meats. I will send them a link  to  the blog, however i just thought it was worth  a mention that  the steak we got was  Mouth watering” cooked of course by Mrs Oldmanleslie” and  over the last 20 years of  buying from them  i have always had great  meat,  cracking service . you might in fact call it ” legendary ”

Not what i expected…………. But Brilliant

So last year , the maistre of the band i drum in Suggested that we had a ” trip out ” and some of you will have seen by blog about the Night. it was free, great, a lot of fun, and  an annual event . For me , on the night , apart from being with “ the band ” and not having to perform, it was being in Glastonbury, a quaint English town, and hearing  Sham 69 Blaring through the night

Great food, fair prices, & a nice surprise at the end of it

Just back from our “Mothers day ”  meal out, when  we asked Ma what she wanted for Mothers day , it was simple …”Italian ”  now as we have one of our group in a wheel chair, we need to make sure a place has good facilities, is child friendly, has decent food, and looks good.

I have to say Carluccios in Chichester fits the bill and ticks all the boxes,

One small point is that  there were 2-3 occasions where things we had asked for we had to remind the staff, but I would recommend the place to any one.

We arrived a little early so me and ” My Oldmanleslie ” had a coffee while they sorted the table ( nice gesture they didn’t charge us for it )

Al the usual things with an Italian, good selection of breads, the Anti Pasto courses where great, the main meals were lovely

11 out of 10  for the Thinly sliced char grilled rump steak, served with rocket leaves and shaved Parmesan, rosemary potatoes and tarragon mayonnaise.

All in all , well worth the Money, and most importantly  “both Mums ” enjoyed it

Oh yes, and the surprise  at the end, ” rose chocolates for the mums ”  , a nice finish to a nice meal

Pagham Beach Update

It seems as if the weather is not  easing .

An update on my earlier blog

Pagham beach closed after sea defences were breached

A beach has been cordoned off after strong tides breached recently completed sea defences.

Solent Coastguard said flood defences at Pagham beach had been breached and part of the shingle bank washed away.

People have been urged to keep away from the area which is very dangerous, a spokesman said.

Arun council was responsible for the sea defence which was completed in December

Large areas of the shingle bank and large boulders, which all formed part of the flood defence scheme, have been washed away over the past week in the poor weather.

For Local peeps ( west Sussex ) , but hopefully it wont last too long

For any one local to west Sussex , it looks like its going to get worse  before it clears

as below from the BBC website   5 January 2014 Last updated at 11:44

A beach in West Sussex has been cordoned off after strong tides breached sea defences.

Solent Coastguard said flood defences at Pagham Beach, near Chichester, had been breached and part of the shingle bank washed away.

People have been urged to keep away from the area which is very dangerous, a spokesman said.

Coastguards, police, the Environment Agency and Arun council were at the scene overnight.

Road closed

“The safety message from all the agencies is that this is a hazardous area and there is no reason for members of the public to be down there,” a coastguard spokesman said.

BBC reporter Simon Jenkins said large areas of the shingle bank and large boulders, which all formed part of a recently completed flood defence scheme, had been washed away over the past week.

Travel reports said Harbour Road, near Lagoon Road, had been closed because of coastal flooding.

Other parts of the Sussex coastline have seen cliffs collapse during storms and tidal surges.

A 9ft (3m) stretch of cliff at Birling Gap went into the sea on Saturday, and part of a cliff collapsed into the waves at Rock-a-Nore, near Hastings, on Friday.

The Environment Agency has warned the south coast remains at risk of coastal flooding throughout the weekend and early into next week.

Valentines Day Update , Its getting  silly down  in this part of the world, it seems a s though this little part of Sussex has been forgotten as it’s not  ” on Thames ”

That is not to detract from the horrible things people in the ” Surrey / Middlesex ” area are experiencing, or the  ongoing horrible  things in the west country ,

But  http://www.bognor.co.uk/news/local/video-commitment-made-to-pagham-s-beach-1-5876209  is this  just a bit late

and what good does ” coming to see it ” do   what it needs is some Major funding  http://www.bognor.co.uk/news/eric-pickles-wants-to-see-pagham-beach-erosion-1-5870346

Old school is always the best way ……..

So today, it was proved to me that ” old School ” is the best way…. we heard from an old Friend of the family a couple of weeks ago that there was a local event that she would like to go to. Just to say the lady involved has no email , no PC, No smart phone. No internet access, She had seen an advert ” printed ” in a local Parish type Magazine

We knew it would be a nice day out with a friend any

sparks

way so off we went to the event… I of course had tried to find it on the www the night before & couldnt so my expectations werent High …

The event was brilliant, a proper local event but on a big scale. all sorts of things going on. we particularly liked the soprano singer . The tree was magnificent

It looks also like it’s an annual event so roll on 2014

Any one who follows the Blog will know from the summer that i know a couple of good places to go in Arundel for that illusive Latte, well today we were on our way to take our friend to our favorite

When almost like a little voice at the side of the road ( or was it that i saw the sign ) i was drawn to what turned out to be the BEST BROWNIE I HAVE EVER EATEN sage

so a great day out generally, a smashing lunch, thanks to the team at sparks yard

, and time with an old friend

Not a bad weekend, and it’s not over yet

All thanks to an Ad in a magazine that an old lady saw ……..Old school is the future

And once again, this place did Not Disappoint, Has to be one of the best hotels in Wigan

I refer back at the start of this review to my earlier one  when i went to  this hotel as a “ lucky find ” and was pleased with the results.

This time , i based my days  business around this area.

So How could  http://www.ashfieldhousehotel.co.uk/index.html  get any better

This time  the  hotel  gave me what they called a better room, there had been nothing wrong at all with 406, this time i Got  403. Only issue with the room, It was almost TOO bigImageImage for  just me . The rate i got was excellent and included a continental breakfast that was lovely.

As per my previous Blog, there was  no chef on site this particular night so, i had contented myself to a few beers  and a crisp based evening meal, Well all i can say is that the  hotel excelled its self by providing Menus for me . ironically they had a take away  menu for  the place i had used last time  and enjoyed     so  this really was a no Brainer,  I had to pay upfront, but  i kind of knew that what i had ordered would be good, i wasn’t disappointed. Especially when the hotel went and got it for me

so very briefly , The hotel was  excellent , the staff were very helpful, the  staff for breakfast were brilliant, and the grounds that the hotel is in is lovely

The restaurant lamamas is an absolute gem of a place, their service in the restaurant was brilliant, and the food  on take away wasn’t too  shabby either

I would recommend both of these places to any one and look forward to going back to the   Ashfield house some time soon

Update , this place is so nice, they even took the time to respond , How nice is that , I will definitely be back

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your email. I have just read through your reviews, its very nice to hear when guests have enjoyed their stay with us being in Standish. We always appreciate feedback both positive and negative so thank you for taking the time to do this. We had plenty people turn up for the wedding open evening so hopefully they liked the look of the venue and what we have to offer. Im glad to hear you’ve enjoyed La Mamas too, hopefully if you return we will have some food available for you to potentially try our menu.

If we don’t see you before, have a great Christmas and hope to see you in the new year.

Kind Regards

Just to increase awareness really, ‘cos its all about the sharing

I’m guessing that those of you that know about this already will know how supportive this network is. I Volunteer  when I can for  the local branch of  the shop mobility network. The office is in Littlehampton and it  provides the local network with all sorts of services and aids for people who need ” a little bit of help”

Doesn’t matter if it’s just a small strap to help  you not to forget your walking stick, to a wheelchair that you need a short term for a relative that is coming to see you.

We offer a full range of devices that can help  with they things that you have to do on a day-to-day basis.

If you have a friend or relation whose needs have changed and as a result you have devices that are no longer needed, then we  may be able ” broker ” a sale for you.

Any how, that’s enough about the shop, come to see  us

What a great Place to shop,

so you may have seen my ” Glasto ” Blog, what a brilliant day we had there, something absolutely amazing to see and something that we will do again I’m sure .

Its not often that you walk into a shop when you are just Mooching and  spend a long time in there, its even less likely that you will actually go back to a store. But this  place i found ticked all the boxes. Image

Really unusual ( to me any way ) things, Clothes, figures, hats, things for mums, dads, and  just about everyone.

It turned out the lady i spoke to was the manager. What a really nice lady she was too.

I wish i could have bought her Monkies, or budgies / parrots on the day, they looked brilliant and i wish i had not resisted, Who knows, when i am back next year, if they are still there Image

Any way , well worth a visit and in my opinion, it has more ” glastonbury ” in it than any other ” glastonbury ” shop

I guess the obvious way to see what they do is  https://www.facebook.com/lilithofavalonltd?fref=ts

What a brilliant Family Night out & free of charge as well

I had the pleasure of being invited to  Glastonbury this year for Free, i was told about the event by the good people who head up celebration samba …. Now I know that everyone will think  of the Massive music festival, but any one who know me  knows I ” aint  the biggest fan of live music ” so that’s unlikely What I didn’t know is that every year in that part of the world there is a whole series  of Illuminated Processions  that tour the area and  on the last night of the season they get together for a competition  and  ” Tour ” around Glastonbury . It’s a free event, all we had to pay was £3.something for a whole days parking in the town The floats are Amazing

Glastonbury Carnival 2011 - Jungle dancers

)

And  as they come past, the heat, Noise and general excitement is Brilliant, Obviously  this has all been caught on you tube , http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1OoMm8iZms  but when you are there its a brilliant low-cost day out for  the whole family. my personal favourite was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBXRa6RE5XQ Take a picnic and you wont even have to spend in the shops and restaurants.Although some of these are excellent and not too pricey

One special mention for  http://www.lilithofavalon.com/  which is a shop i certainly hadn’t seen the like of before, it was fascinating . and i would recommend a look in there if you go ” down Glastonbury way “

The homepage for the carnival is http://glastonburycarnival.com/ and I am sure I will be there next year … hope to see you And just for the record , I’m not part of the committee, or have anything to do with the shop, I’m just sharing what was a brilliant day out

Just Back from a Weeks Stay at Center Parcs ( UK ) Elveden Forest. http://www.aquasana.co.uk/ is the company that provide the on site  Spa facilities for the Site. What can i say about this Place. It is Absolutely amazing , Even though it was having maintenance carried out on the pool.  The facilities here were incredible. Special Thanks to the lady i think was one of the managers  ” George ” she took what  could have turned very sour  as a situation and Turned  it around excellently. Her and her team made the  whole experience Brilliant. I would say  if you are going to  this site then its well worth making time for the spa.

there has to be some event in here to take your Kids to this holiday and alledgedly they are all ” free” good luck

let me know how you get on   http://www.free-events.co.uk/  the events seem to be throughout the year as well so it might be good to use  in the autumn  and beyond

What a way to spend a week off…

So, my first blog post, What a scary thought, how to complete it, will any one actually  see it. I guess the only way to find out is to give it a go and see….

Had this week just past off from Tempcon   and this year as a family  we decided to have what they call in the UK  a “Stay-Cation “. Managed to get a few things done that we wanted around the house, Didn’t need the usual trip to B&Q  as  the cold & bad weather that we have had previously  meant No gardening.

Obviously being off meant yesterday was clear  for a spot of drumming with the band  which is always good .

A day out with the family at Chessington  went down well. In fact tempered with a couple of sessions  for the number one son  at the Driving School  and a spot of retail therapy at Ikea as number two son loves the hot-dogs  it hasn’t been a bad week off.

And then to top it all off, I followed  the example and started to do  some of the on-line Competitions  that a friend and a cousin had been doing for a while  & knowing that they had  won  things i was optimistic

I got my first win. Dont worry it not a life changer

Any how, that’s probably a bad attempt at a first blog, but  we all have to start somewhere
