Great food, fair prices, & a nice surprise at the end of it

Just back from our “Mothers day ”  meal out, when  we asked Ma what she wanted for Mothers day , it was simple …”Italian ”  now as we have one of our group in a wheel chair, we need to make sure a place has good facilities, is child friendly, has decent food, and looks good.

I have to say Carluccios in Chichester fits the bill and ticks all the boxes,

One small point is that  there were 2-3 occasions where things we had asked for we had to remind the staff, but I would recommend the place to any one.

We arrived a little early so me and ” My Oldmanleslie ” had a coffee while they sorted the table ( nice gesture they didn’t charge us for it )

Al the usual things with an Italian, good selection of breads, the Anti Pasto courses where great, the main meals were lovely

11 out of 10  for the Thinly sliced char grilled rump steak, served with rocket leaves and shaved Parmesan, rosemary potatoes and tarragon mayonnaise.

All in all , well worth the Money, and most importantly  “both Mums ” enjoyed it

Oh yes, and the surprise  at the end, ” rose chocolates for the mums ”  , a nice finish to a nice meal

its all about the perception ….4 door family saloons are getting ” planet friendly” and a gallon is only £6.50ish

Those that know me, know what i do for  a living and it involves an occasional drive to see people …… I just spent 5 hours and £40 UK  using public transport  to get me only 100 miles round trip , This got me thinking Well for those that  don’t like the ” German sheds” that are on the road, with just a driver in them during the day , paying tax , fuel duty  and all the other taxes levied against  motorists, I’m pleased to see  that the Car i drive  tops this list  of Efficient cars for MPG in its class, and is way more comfortable than the train

and if you think back to the old days, the A6 Audi  would equate to the mid range 4 door car in the range, equivalent to the ford Cortina , or Vauxhall cavalier ( UK models ) with the A8 ( as the equivalent of the Granada / omega )

I’m just looking at a comparison based on information  from the web, but it seems that the big motor manufacturers have really improved their MPG

Small 4 door  family saloon  Honda civic gives in excess of  70MPG Not a lot of boot space in a honda civic though , i know from experience

4 door  Family saloon  just short of 65MPG  Huge boot, comfortable  & consumatly safe for all passengers

Environmentally focused Prius  actually gives  60MPG again, more for a small shop as not a huge boot and cant take 5 people comfortably

However, when you make the jump to a real planet friendly  option @ 85+MPG  you have to sacrifice 3 seats  No space for shopping, 2 seats, and no crumple zones in an accident

And from a safety point of view, especially considering children and babies that are carried, or when a family wants to go away on hols, or actually buy something in a shop, space is paramount

I know which of the above  i would prefer to be in with my family  if it came to a crash

so using my car  would have cost about £12 for fuel and depreciation for the whole trip, i could have taken more  kit with me, i could have taken clients out. Instead i spent the day on a train & tube system that is not hygenic, Not healthy , and not good for stress levels

Rant Over ,

Another example of Not Good service…..but at least they changed the cup

so as  the sun decided to come out today , i guess like everyone else , the ” oldmanleslie” clan decided to go out for  a little retail therapy .

So off we went  to Haskins which is a regional Chain  Garden centre.  It was recently revamped to  basically be about 5 different types of restaurant  & coffee shops  and a place to buy plants and related things for the garden.Haskins Garden Centre

All i have to blog is that the service from the staff at  the tills, wasn’t good. I have never had the misfortune  of actually having some one  give me a discount because ” they haven’t answered when i have rung them , and i cant be bothered to check ”  when  as customers we had dared to pick up what was a plant that wasn’t part of the offer that  it was marked as….

Surely, the staff in  these places ” should be  bothered “.

The lady that was serving in the coffee shop wasnt, when she served my  coffee in a dirty cup,  but the lady that changed it for a fresh one in a clean cup was.

Simple  questions from this  are :

  • Is it wrong to expect proper service from retail staff  in ” brand ” owned shops
  • should it only be what appear to be the older staff that actually try to help

Having once again tried Costa  Coffee, and  still not had a good one, i think i will Stop trying.

I’m going to become a Starbucks Bunny, as although it costs a little more, its always nicer. And  for those  that follow my blog, you will know that if im local , it’s the London road coffee shop ( bognor  ) Sparks yard ( arundel ) and Lulamaes. all of which as far as i know are independent

A blog that is worth watching for Mobility issues ( south coast UK )

This one is a bit regional , but well worth a look if you are based on the south coast an d have, or know any one with Mobility Issues that could  do with a helping Hand from time to time

Freebies are always good ….

Something Good, Sustainable and low-cost

What a refreshingly good Story to see.

Simon Dale is a family man in Wales,

His interest in self-sustainability and an ecological awareness led him to dig out and build his own home—one of the loveliest, warmest, most inviting dwellings you could ever imagine. And it cost him only £3,000, about $4,700 American dollars!

Can you imagine a more charming entrance than this?Man Builds Fairy Tale Home for His Family – Total Cost £3,000 - Hobbit Home

Simon gives two reasons for building the home. The first elegant one, from his website, is: “It’s fun. Living your own life, in your own way is rewarding. Following our dreams keeps our souls alive.” His second reason is a plea for sustainability, in which he states that “our supplies are dwindling and our planet is in ecological catastrophe”. You can read the full and passionate statement here. Simon is also a photographer, and as you can see throughout this article, a talented one. A beautiful view in another home that Simon is helping build for someone else. (Originally, this was mistakenly identified as a photo of the home he and his family are living in.) The tools are fairly simple.Man Builds Fairy Tale Home for His Family – Total Cost £3,000 - Hobbit Home Interior The main concession to modernity was a chainsaw, which he used to cut down about 30 small trees. No old growth forest fell to his family’s needs. He focused on tools that used his own energy, like shovel, chisel, and hammer. Yet it took him only four months to produce this lovely home. The home is constructed from wood, stone, straw, and has a sod roof. It’s heated with a wood fireplace and has a solar panel for power. Most materials were scavenged and refurbished appliances. The effect, though, isn’t of a run-down get-by-with-second-best . It’s creative, artistic, elegant, and cozy. It is, in fact, magical. Most amazingly, the home didn’t require years of training or experience. Simon had none. He’s not an architect. He’s not an engineer. He’s not a carpenter. He started from scratch in every sense. He told the Daily Mail: “Being your own have-a-go architect is a lot of fun and allows you to create and enjoy something which is part of yourself and the land rather than, at worst, a mass-produced box designed for maximum profit and the convenience of the construction industry.” Building from natural materials does away with producers’ profits and the cocktail of carcinogenic poisons that fill most modern buildings. He was fortunate in obtaining the land for his home. The plot, a bit of a large piece, was given to him in exchange for its caretaking. Simon Dale, his wife Jasmine Saville, and their two children in front of their completed home just 4 months after starting it! This and all photos on this page are by Simon Dale ( The attention to making the home eco-friendly extends to a compost toilet, the use of straw over a plastic layer for insulation, and a refrigerator that’s cooled with air that flows from under the home’s foundation. Cement is a high carbon emitter, so the interior walls are finished with lime plaster instead of cement plaster. Simon is now involved in building another home for the Lammas Project, an organization dedicated to low-impact building. Focus is not only on the homes themselves, but also on planting trees and gardens, and on low impact living in general. Here’s how he sums up his view on his home and the Lammas Project: This building is one part of a low-impact or permaculture approach to life. This sort of life is about living in harmony with both the natural world and ourselves, doing things simply and using appropriate levels of technology. These sort of low-cost, natural buildings have a place not only in their own sustainability, but also in their potential to provide affordable housing which allows people access to land and the opportunity to lead more simple, sustainable lives. I cannot imagine a home more lovely, appealing, and livable than this one. This could be and should be the wave of the future in home building. Pagham Beach Update

It seems as if the weather is not  easing .

An update on my earlier blog

Pagham beach closed after sea defences were breached

A beach has been cordoned off after strong tides breached recently completed sea defences.

Solent Coastguard said flood defences at Pagham beach had been breached and part of the shingle bank washed away.

People have been urged to keep away from the area which is very dangerous, a spokesman said.

Arun council was responsible for the sea defence which was completed in December

Large areas of the shingle bank and large boulders, which all formed part of the flood defence scheme, have been washed away over the past week in the poor weather.

This should not be allowed to happen, it’s the pupils that suffer

I don’t know where you stand on the whole   State / Private / Academy  debate. im sure there are plus points  for each. This is an Academy local to  me and it seems that from the information in the article that as a result of a head master leaving his post, the kids at this place will  undoubtedly suffer  with the disruption that this will cause.Steve Jewell with pupils at the Littlehampton Academy

Why can this be allowed to happen, Aren’t the high school years  tough enough on children

Any how, that’s my rant over for the day

For Local peeps ( west Sussex ) , but hopefully it wont last too long

For any one local to west Sussex , it looks like its going to get worse  before it clears

as below from the BBC website   5 January 2014 Last updated at 11:44

A beach in West Sussex has been cordoned off after strong tides breached sea defences.

Solent Coastguard said flood defences at Pagham Beach, near Chichester, had been breached and part of the shingle bank washed away.

People have been urged to keep away from the area which is very dangerous, a spokesman said.

Coastguards, police, the Environment Agency and Arun council were at the scene overnight.

Road closed

“The safety message from all the agencies is that this is a hazardous area and there is no reason for members of the public to be down there,” a coastguard spokesman said.

BBC reporter Simon Jenkins said large areas of the shingle bank and large boulders, which all formed part of a recently completed flood defence scheme, had been washed away over the past week.

Travel reports said Harbour Road, near Lagoon Road, had been closed because of coastal flooding.

Other parts of the Sussex coastline have seen cliffs collapse during storms and tidal surges.

A 9ft (3m) stretch of cliff at Birling Gap went into the sea on Saturday, and part of a cliff collapsed into the waves at Rock-a-Nore, near Hastings, on Friday.

The Environment Agency has warned the south coast remains at risk of coastal flooding throughout the weekend and early into next week.

Valentines Day Update , Its getting  silly down  in this part of the world, it seems a s though this little part of Sussex has been forgotten as it’s not  ” on Thames ”

That is not to detract from the horrible things people in the ” Surrey / Middlesex ” area are experiencing, or the  ongoing horrible  things in the west country ,

But  is this  just a bit late

and what good does ” coming to see it ” do   what it needs is some Major funding

A heads up is never a bad thing

I am needing a bit of advice

So I decided that i will try to daily blog, I’m hoping its gonna be good to read, I will try to put a freebie in there some where  each time, But i want a spot of advice on how to get my blog far and wide. I look at as i was pointed in that direction, My bloggings aren’t really child based though .

So where to begin …?

any how, here’s the freebie  i found .

Traditional Christmas..? what does that mean, traditional is something that you expect to see ..

generally something that gives you a warm fuzzy feeling ..

Dependant on where about in the UK you live  take your kids along, the whole Santa, warm & fuzzy Christmas feeling  is just around the corner  ( possibly )

Star Wars ……Great News

something to look forward  to …………

With pre-production in full-swing, a confirmed release date of December 18, 2015, has been set for Lucasfilm’s highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII.

“We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture,” said Alan Horn, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios.

Star Wars: Episode VII will be directed by J.J. Abrams (Super 8Mission: Impossible IIIStar Trek) and is being scripted by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost ArkThe Empire Strikes BackReturn of the Jedi). Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, with Tommy Harper (Mission: Impossible – Ghost ProtocolJack RyanStar Trek Into Darkness) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin,War of the Worlds) serving as executive producers. John Williams is returning to score Star Wars: Episode VII.

Shooting is scheduled to begin spring 2014 at Pinewood Studios.

Its how you handle it that is important ……

Any one that knows me, knows that  one of the things i hold as important is Good service, I think that if you Give good service it will help to calm many situations and  there shouldn’t be anything you cant sort out …..

Warwick Castle

I am not going to name people in this blog as that would be unfair to them, and to the organisations that they represent, it will all become clear, and i will notify them of this post

About  a year ago whilst  we were on a stay cation ( the buzzword for what used to be called a UK holiday ) We decided that  it would be  good to take the Boys for a day in Warwick castle. To show the history etc and all the heraldry that goes with it, Now i know that the internet is full of offers for places like this, but this was a spur of the moment decision and we  decided to go  and see. Well, we had an Ok day in the Castle , loads to see and do for the Boys , and a great show in the dungeon, but when we worked out what the day had cost us overall, i felt that it wasn’t good value for Money , so when we left and i was asked had we had a good day , i told someone what i thought.  I think they were a little surprised by my comments. but they went and got someone who actually listened to what i was saying. and after a conversation about the ” value ” and how we felt, we left the site.  Warwick castle is a long way from home  for us. so we didn’t simply want to go back and  have another day  there, we felt that we had seen the castle at its best and that was enough.

Merlin Entertainments

The Merlin groups representative that we had spoken to , true to their word, stayed in contact  and  arranged for us to  see what the group could do at another site and  tried all they could to put the bad feeling  behind us, So off we went to chessington, a place which i had very fond memories of as a teenager, this was at Easter, and as the park had just opened for the year, not everything was ready, not all the rides were open, so it wasn’t a good day . which we reported back to the Merlin contact . At this point some companies would draw a line under it all, and the comments would be forgotten, the emails lost , and the customer left  feeling confused. This is not the case with Merlin , Their man-made sure that we went back to chessington, we saw all we wanted to see, and that we had a great time there.  He liaised with the guys locally who really  help us have a great day . the kids loved it, my memories were confirmed, the day was excellent.

Chessington World of Adventures

My point is  that  even though i had to pay fuel etc, lunches, drinks, and all the other things that kids have once inside the gates of a theme park, The service that i had received to get me there was excellent.  I didn’t go in to  shout the odds at the team at the castle , i was calm with them . factually correct. and they listened. their customer service is excellent and i would thoroughly recommend a day out at chessington to any one. I can only hope that  the other sites in the group are as good, i suppose i will have to try one each summer.

In closing , to the people who helped me, Thank you very much

And it was GOOD , Mind you so was the lady dressed as a witch that served me

Hero Landing Page Banner

Been off this week , so got a few Sneaky ” non weekend ” latte’s in there. and as i was waiting to have by car fixed, i thought i would give in to the corporate  brand  and try …….

OMG , it was gorgeous,  with all the trimmings. Couldn’t Fault it, drank every last drop

On a separate issue, why is it that as i get older, i find witches  and all things Halloween  weirdly  attractive , could it be early exposure to Elvira

Happy Halloween Boys & girls

What a Gem of a place … Sea Breezes Guest house , Plymouth

All i can say about this place, is that i wish i had found it a long time ago, I had the pleasure of 2 nights there for business this week. To save time, I am simply blogging that I agree with Everything stated on which is the guest house’s site  B&B in Plymouth

Clean rooms, good breakfast , comfy beds, & a very attentive ( but not intrusive ) landlady. who even gave me extra bacon as i wasnt keen on the sausages

Here is  a little freebie i found that is Absolutely great for the kids  and they have just added loads of new stencils to download.

There is a real range to choose from, and it even tells you how hard each one is to carve. Great fun with the kids, and even more challenging ones for the adults.

Of course you will want to ensure that children are  supervised when cutting any thing that involves sharp knives or scissors

Happy Halloween  everyone

example stencils can be found at  and once you have opened them  you can save your pumpkin pattern to your desktop, or open it. Once you have it opened in a PDF reader, print it off, and get carving!

Free language courses

I was asked to get the word out on this website under the category of free learning

Image representing Duolingo as depicted in Cru...  yes , they have the usual tools for converting language , Could be ideal  as they also have  a section called ” incubator ” which covers  foreign languages for Non English speakers   where you can help others with their learning.

They Bill themselves as ” No fees, no ads, no gimmicks. A college-quality education without the pricetag. ”

I am going to have a look at this  site and see if i can help others out, as its all about the sharing. It is a facebook ” game ” so there is that small amount of competition  with your buddies.

Thank you to my mate Russel  for pointing it out to me

What a great place for a stop, on a lazy Sunday

Right in the middle of what must be englands Sleepiest city ( arundel ) is what bills itself as a lifestyle store, I’m not quite sure what this defines it as, but on floor 2 of 3 of the store is  the  coffee shop area.  Gorgeous milk shakes ( i had and oreo one )  proper big slices of cake, and smartie  cookies for the kids…this was all we wanted as it was just a stop, but there is a full menu on offer.

Clean tables, good service, an outside terrace to sit on . They even offer loan blankets for when it gets  a little chilly.

Once we had  our snack, up to the newly set up Christmas store on the 2nd floor, what a load of really nice  traditional  toys & gifts  they have .

There is a lift to all floors of this store, the  team that run it seem to care about what people think.

Well worth another visit  maybe for a bit of Christmas shopping. If you go , pass on my best to Andrew

The victim was walking through Longbrook Park when she was approached by a man from behind between 4pm and 4.45pm on September 24.

The man indecently assaulted the woman but fled after the woman hit him with her handbag.

Officers are considering the possibility that the incident could be linked to an incident in Flansham Lane on September 18 when a man grabbed a woman but then ran off.

Detective sergeant Sally Arbuckle said: “We are considering the possibility that the same man is responsible for both incidents.

“Neither victim has been seriously hurt but both are understandably upset at what happened to them.

“I am keen to speak to anyone who was in Longbrook Park at the time on September 24 and could have seen what happened.

“I would urge women walking in the area to stay vigilant.

“There is nothing to suggest that this man poses a physical threat to anyone but it is still important that women stay alert and contact us if they are concerned about the behaviour of any men they see acting suspiciously.”

Anyone with information should call 101 quoting serial 543 of September 25 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

It looks like ” googling it ” is getting easier, and it will find even more

In its pursuit of global  domination  Google has overhauled its search algorithm, the foundation of the Internet’s dominant search engine, to better cope with the longer, more complex queries it has been getting from Web users.

Could this mean that it even easier to find ” that which you seek “
